Millions of readers have rated romance novels on the popular website Goodreads. Romance readers like to share their thoughts. Harlequin alone publishes works by more than 1,300 authors across 11 imprints. The Romance Writers of America association boasts membership of more than 10,000 romance writers and romance industry professionals in more than 145 local and online chapters. A lot of people are writing romance novels. Care to take a guess? Yep, Fifty Shades of Grey. It also reported the number-one title across the entire portfolio of ebook sales since the introduction of the Kindle. Digital Spy also reported Amazon’s top authors in the ebook category over the previous five years, and it included two erotica authors, EL James and Sylvia Day. Novels in the romance genre make up a huge percentage of ebook sales, according to a 2014 Nielson survey-nearly 39% of the market share that year. Romance novels play a huge role in the ebook revolution. Among those readers, 35.1% have been reading the romance genre for 20 years or more, and are most likely to be between the ages of 30 and 54 years old. Women are not the only readers of romanceĪccording to a 2014 Nielson Romance Buyer Survey, and reported by Romance Writers of America, 84% of romance readers are women, and 16% are men. Fan of historical, family-centered romance? Futuristic space romance? Military special ops romance? There’s a book for you-many, in fact. And a desire to get our heart fluttering, whether that happens on an emotional or corporeal level or-in the best-case scenario-both.įrom Christian and religious romance to paranormal romance involving shape-shifters and the like, there are as many genres of romance novels as there are ideas of what romance is. Encompassing books from classic literature like Romeo and Juliet and Pride and Prejudice all the way to erotica like The Story of O or, yes, Fifty Shades of Grey, books in the romance genre always have one thing in common: love, of course. The romance genre, as any seasoned reader knows, is vast and varied.
